Ancient History of Cambusnethan Lodge (1796) of Ancient Order Free Gardeners
Based on historical records of the Order of Free Gardeners, the Cambusnethan Lodge was one of three new lodges established in 1796. This was a development for the fraternal society, which until that point had seen little expansion beyond its first two lodges Haddington Lodge and Dunfermline Lodge.
1796 Free Gardeners expansion
Prior to 1796, the Order's expansion had been limited to just two lodges:
The first lodge, founded in Haddington in 1676.
The second lodge, founded in Dunfermline around 1715.
For decades, these lodges had resisted the formation of new ones. The creation of three new lodges in a single year at Arbroath, Bothwell, and Cambusnethan—indicated a new phase of growth and the strengthening popularity of such independent societies.
